THE HOTEL COMES FIRST. EVERYTHING ELSE FOLLOWS. INTELLIGENCE IN LUXURY HOTELS.
ROOM TO DREAM

The Suite Life

There is a certain arithmetic to travel that most travelers never trouble themselves to solve — the quiet difference between a room and a suite, between passing through a city and settling briefly into it. The Suite Life exists for those who have made peace with wanting more, and would simply prefer to know when more is worth having. Across the world's most considered hotels, that calculation has already been done: the extra space, the private sitting room before breakfast, weighed plainly against what it costs in any given week. Some months a suite trades for nearly the price of an ordinary room; other months it does not, and this collection makes no secret of which is which. It is not a shortcut to luxury — travel of this kind rarely offers one — but it is, at least, an honest map of where the ground shifts favorably beneath it.

Sentosa Suite85 m² (915 sq ft)1 King Bed
Twelve hectares of rain-forested grounds separate Capella Singapore from the rest of Sentosa, the resort island off Singapore's southern coast long given over to beach clubs, golf courses, and a certain deliberate remove from the city across the strait. The hotel opened in 2009, designed by Foster + Partners, who reworked a pair of conserved colonial-era buildings into the heart of the new resort. Those structures — gazetted for conservation and later recognised with a URA Architectural Heritage Award — were built in the 1880s as officers' quarters, with separate blocks originally used as a mess and as family housing overlooking the harbour; their restoration preserved the original verandahs, terracotta-tiled roofs, and proportions of the white-stone buildings, while new construction was set discreetly around them. Foster + Partners' contemporary wings rise to the same height as the historic pair and curve outward from either side in a long serpentine loop, their facades finished in earth-toned balustrades chosen to echo the terracotta of the original roofs, with deep, curved roof overhangs designed to shed Singapore's heavy tropical rainfall, a climate-responsive detail Foster + Partners carried across the new wings as a unifying motif. Inside, the restraint continues: pale timber, stone, and glass predominate over ornament, the hotel's materials chosen to sit quietly alongside the whitewashed walls of the colonial originals rather than compete with them. Sentosa sits across the narrow Keppel Strait from mainland Singapore, a resort island of man-made beaches, rainforested trails, and Sentosa Golf Club's two championship courses, long host to the SMBC Singapore Open. Monitor lizards and long-tailed macaques still move through its surviving forest patches, a reminder that much of the island was returned to green space well before it became the city's favoured retreat from its own density. The result holds 112 rooms, suites, villas, and manors in total — Colonial Manors among them, three-bedroom apartments with their own lap pools — arranged in curved lines punctuated by swimming pools that step down through the planting toward the sea, alongside Cassia, a Cantonese fine-dining room, and the Auriga spa. The loop encloses a central garden, part of more than five thousand trees planted across the site, with winding paths connecting the garden to the beach below as the dense canopy gives way gradually to more open lawn near the shoreline. Peacocks wander the lawns in the late afternoon, entirely unconcerned with the five-minute walk to the beach.

Personality King Suite85 m² (915 sq ft)1 King Bed
Even now, the Long Bar's floor is still sticky with peanut shells by evening — a small, deliberate disorder inside a building otherwise kept in white-and-green colonial symmetry — on Beach Road, a stretch of the old city once prized simply for its nearness to the water and now folded into Singapore's dense, glittering downtown, where the hotel's low profile sits in quiet contrast to the office towers around it. The main building was completed in 1899 to the design of architect Regent Alfred John Bidwell of the Singapore firm Swan & Maclaren, who worked in a neo-Renaissance idiom of symmetrical massing and classical orders — Corinthian and Doric columns, rounded arches, and broad Palladian windows divided by vertical mullions — paired with deep verandahs built to catch cross-breezes through the tropical heat. The plasterwork facades are dressed in white stucco under green-shuttered trim, and the main entrance still shelters under an ornamental cast-iron portico cast by the Glasgow foundry Walter MacFarlane & Company, reproduced faithfully during restoration from the original design. Beach Road once ran along Singapore's original shoreline, prized simply for its proximity to the sea trade that built the colonial port; land reclamation has since folded it inland, bordering today's Civic District and Marina Bay, so that a street once defined by the water now sits as a quiet seam inside the city's glittering financial core — the shoreline it was named for having moved on without it. A later, extensive restoration closed the hotel for two years and reopened it on 16 September 1991, converting every guest room into a suite. The hotel now holds 115 suites in all, arranged around planted courtyards and open-air verandahs across three low floors, a scale that has changed little even as the city around it has grown vertical. Eight restaurants and an arcade of some forty boutiques fill out the grounds, giving guests reason to never quite leave. Raffles counted Joseph Conrad among its earliest guests, Rudyard Kipling stayed and wrote of dining there, Somerset Maugham reputedly drafted stories beneath a Palm Court frangipani tree, and Noël Coward visited on tour — a run of literary association few hotels anywhere can match. The Singapore Sling itself was invented at the Long Bar by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon, usually dated to around 1915, and still arrives the same pale pink it always has, carried out to travellers who have come, as travellers always have, for the particular stillness the place keeps. A stay here is less a visit than an induction into a continuity the city around it rarely affords itself.

Chao Phraya Suite85 m² (915 sq ft)1 King Bed
The approach has never really changed: a teak launch cutting across the brown width of the Chao Phraya, the lobby still some minutes off, Bangkok's traffic and noise left behind on the far bank. The hotel sits in Bang Rak, the old trading quarter where the city's first foreign consulates and import houses once clustered along the river, and where antique shophouses and narrow lanes still carry something of that nineteenth-century commercial air. The hotel's own history reaches back further than most in Asia — a modest Oriental Hotel stood here from 1865, serving the sailors and traders who crewed the ships calling at Siam, before the Danish merchant Hans Niels Andersen, who had acquired the property in 1881, rebuilt it with partners Peter Andersen and Frederick Kinch and opened its River Wing on 19 May 1887, complete with a billiards room, smoking and ladies' rooms, and a bar that could seat fifty. That original structure, now known as the Authors' Wing, survives as a colonial-era set piece of whitewashed plaster, dark timber shutters and wide verandahs, its interiors still dressed in polished teak panelling and rattan furniture, deliberately kept apart in style from the newer Garden and River wings that have grown up around it over the twentieth century. Bang Rak rose to prominence after an 1855 trade treaty opened Siam to wider international commerce, when Charoen Krung — reported to be the country's first paved road, laid in the early 1860s — drew consulates, trading houses and warehouses from Portuguese, French, Chinese and Indian merchants to its riverbank. That cosmopolitan footprint survives in the district's remaining shophouses and converted warehouses, now re-emerging as a creative quarter even as glass office towers have risen around nearby Silom and Sathon. The hotel today holds 393 rooms, including 35 suites within the storied Garden Wing, arranged around eight restaurants, among them Le Normandie, its celebrated French dining room overlooking the river. Between the wings, a sequence of formal, densely planted gardens — clipped hedges, frangipani and palm, a lawn running down toward the water — gives the property a layered, almost compound-like footprint rather than a single block, with covered walkways threading guests from one era of the hotel to the next. The spa is set apart across the water, its Ayurvedic treatment pavilions built low and timber-framed in a style echoing traditional Thai houses, reached by private boat, a quieter counterpart to the main house. The hotel's Authors' Wing suites carry the names of ten writers who stayed there over the decades, among them Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward and Graham Greene; one suite is named for Conrad's own ship, the Otago, said to have sought shelter on the river by the hotel a century ago. Norman Mailer, who addressed a Southeast Asian Writers' Award ceremony hosted at the hotel in 1998, was honoured with a suite of his own afterward — details drawn from the hotel's own published history. Within the gardens, little seems to have hurried since those first guests came ashore — a hush that persists even as the river traffic builds outside.
